Star Style: Kylie Minogue

We know what you're thinking; you thought it would be Madonna right? Well, as much as we love Madge and appreciate her style status throughout the last three decades we went in a total polar opposite opting for child-actress turned global superstar Kylie Minogue.

The petite Australian started out her career in TV soap Neighbours as the lovable girl-next-door Charlene Mitchell (1986) and even though we loved her dungaree-clad outfits and overly permed hair it was Kylie's venture into music which swung our adoration for her. In 1987 Kylie released Locomotion' which was to become the best-selling single of the decade. It spent seven weeks at number 1 and made her fans start to forget the overalls and invest in Kylie's new found 80s dress sense; think power shoulders, ripped denim, over-sized jumpers and leggings. Red carpet wise Kylie was seen at all the right events dressing in another 80s trend; ruffles.

However in the late 1980s Kylie ditched her good-girl status when she started dating InXS front man Michael Hutchence; as a result both Kylie's hemlines and hairline got shorter!

In the early 90s Kylie's had gone from full-time soap star to worldwide phenomenon. She also showcased another new grown-up style with straightened hair and was experimenting more with her fashion choices. Whilst her song releases were becoming more and more mature Kylie herself was heading down a new style route adorning crop tops and brightly coloured trousers, alongside a more urban style dress sense. Aside from experimenting with hair colours and styles, the singer still looked demure on her red carpet stints adorning figure-hugging pieces which left little to the imagination.

In 1995 Kylie walked the runway for fashion designer Antonio Berardi in a plunging red number and wo! uld go on to re-create her style based on this new found sexy image. In this period she also starred in such films as Street Fighter opposite Jean-Claude Van Damme and had of course become a household name attending fashion shows worldwide and hanging out with the new cool crowds.

Towards the end of the decade Kylie again cropped her hair into another short sleek style and although she had to publically deal with the death of ex-beau Michael Hutchence, came back fighting attending ever major event as well as getting back into performing, looking more demure and chic than ever.

Kylie was also now decked in designer wear (such as Julian Macdonald and Dolce & Gabbana) and whilst she hadn't had a number-one single since Confide in Me' in 1994 her biggest comeback was about to hit. In 2000 she launched her seventh studio album Light Years', releasing the now iconic single Spinning Around'. Kylie's video showed the singer in a brand new light as she writhed around in gold hot pants and a halter neck with her trademark golden curls. This has since been recognised as her most iconic video to date; TV's golden girl was back with a bang and this cemented her iconic status once more. More than this though designers were taking note and high street stores were copying her designs and producing pieces that consumers could also wear.

It seemed that Kylie was now on a role as a year later she came back with a punch once again releasing Can't Get You Out of My Head'. Again to critical acclaim this single was a worldwide hit due to the memorable attire Kylie and her dancers wore, mixing a fusion of futuristic and body-con, masculine and Marilyn Monroe inspired pieces.

Even though the Princess of Pop was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005, she has never shied away from the spotlight being an avid part of the celebrity and red carpet culture and winning a spate of awards for her ! service t! o music including her current title O.B.E.

In 2009 Kylie came straight back onto the scene co-presenting the BRIT awards alongside James Corden and Mathew Horne; she changed several times during the event but looked stunning in each choice of gowns. Kylie also appeared at the Cannes Film Festival in 2012 to help promote her new film Holy Motors in a super-cute khaki coloured day dress.

Nowadays though her off-duty casual style gets her just as much press as her red carpet looks and it seems that even after three decades and a phenomenal career, that the Princess of Pop is still going strong. Therefore Kylie Minogue will always be our ultimate style icon.
