Kylie Minogue has thanked everyone who took part in Sydney's Mardi Gras festival at the weekend.

The Australian singer, who was the headline act at the 34th annual gay and lesbian parade, performed a medley of classic hits such as 'Wow', 'It's In Your Eyes', 'All the Lovers' and 'Locomotion' on stage surrounded by a troupe of dancers at 2am.

Afterwards, Minogue wrote on her Twitter page: "ThkU THANK YOU @SydneyMardiGras & Mardigrasland... YOU were amazing... I am #happytiredwiredrelievedamazedgrateful (sic)."

She later added: "Still simply cannot believe the amount of people who were in or helped create the K25 float," and posted a photo of her stage outfit.

According to The ABC, organisers said that over 9,000 people dressed in sparkly costumes and uniforms marched in the parade, while thousands more watched the procession along Oxford Street.

Many of the floats at this year's Mardi Gras campaigned for Australia to legalise gay marriage, agreeing with celebrities who have recently spoken out in support such as Magda Szubanski and Lady GaGa.

Sam Sparro also performed at the ceremony. Politicians such as Tanya Plibersek and Anthony Albanese both took part, while Sydney Mayor Clover Moore also attended the event.

Federal Transport Minister Anthony Albanese, who has marched in the parade for the past 25 years, says while a lot of reforms have passed in that time, there is still more to be done. Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young said that that the marriage equality campaign has come a long way in the Government.

"We have several bills in parliament," she said. "Tony Abbott now has to step out of the way and let his party catch up with the people."
